All of us go through times when things happen that don't seem to make a lot of sense. There are even times when we face events or circumstances that seem overwhelming. But there is one truth that can hold us firm no matter what we face in life: God is in control! This means that in each and every circumstance - God is in control. In stressful events at work or at home, or perhaps in the church - God is in control. It means that my joy and happiness in life are not based upon the situations I face, but in the one, unmoveable, unshakable conviction that God is in control of all things.
In his little book entitled God is in Control, Charles Stanley has written: "When a person can come to the place in life where they can say with absolute conviction, 'Yes, but my God is in control,' there is an awesome sense of strength and assurance that will fill the heart to overflow with an indescribable joy and peace. No matter what the challenges we face in life, this peace can remain" (p. 9).
To know - to deeply know - that God is in control, changes everything for me. It's like Frank Laubach wrote so many years ago "I feel simply carried along each hour, doing my part in a plan which is far beyond myself" (see January 2, 2006 post for more on Dr. Laubach). This little statement best describes how I feel. With God in control - with His plan unfolding as He sees it should - how can we not give thanks in all circumstances? Always remember, God is in control!
